Culture & Society

Culture & Society

Where we live greatly influences how we live. Our religion, beliefs, values, and customs shape our society. Unfortunately, many people feel disconnected from their communities because they don’t see value in where they live or in what their beliefs represent.

For example, someone born in the United States is likely to believe in democracy and, in many cases, Christian values. Conversely, someone born in India might believe in autocracy and follow Islam. What leads one group to feel justified in their beliefs over the other?

One significant lesson I’ve learned from my travels is that every individual matters—our feelings, beliefs, and values are important. We may occasionally feel disillusioned, stray from our paths, or discover new ways of thinking and living, but it’s crucial that we take our feelings seriously and strive to understand them.

All religions, countries, and belief systems encompass extreme views. However, this does not inherently make one belief superior to another.

Through my travels, I have gained insights into Islam, Buddhism, Hinduism, and Judaism, as well as a deeper understanding of Catholicism and Christianity. I have come to realise that being born in a different country does not make someone evil or an enemy simply because they have a different worldview.

In my opinion, any religion that promotes acceptance of others is a positive force. While differing views and values may not always align, the ability to recognise and respect these differences is essential for coexisting peacefully.
